The Purpose of Being Alive – Luke 13: 6-9

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down”.

The farm owner was not keeping the fig tree on his farm for decorative purposes; he wanted it for fruits. After waiting for years, the tree remained fruitless, and so he decided to get rid of it. Beloved, are you fulfilling any purpose in God’s kingdom? Are you just a statistic on the number of Christians alive or are you bearing fruit?

We need to ask ourselves this question, what is my purpose for being alive?    A farmer that plants a crop and nurtures it will be expecting a bountiful harvest at the end of the season. Each time we invest in something, we always want to have a return on our investment.  God made us to be fruitful, He put us on earth and matches us with our family, country, city and place of work for a reason. We must allow God’s will to manifest in our lives by bearing fruit through worship, faithfulness, selfless service and showing love to others. “For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139;13-14).

As long as you have breath, you have a purpose and cannot afford to stay fruitless.  Let us use our God’s given gift to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God (I Peter 4:10).

Jesus Christ died on the cross and washed away our sins. We must confess and acknowledge God as our Lord and savior.  Beloved, examine yourself today to determine if you are currently fruitless. Are you exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in all that you do? In addition to manifesting the fruit of the Spirit, we are also expected to bear fruits of souls into God’s kingdom, and these fruits must remain. The fruit of souls you win for Christ will remain when you follow them up and teach them the ways of the kingdom. May the Lord strengthen you as you faithfully do all this in Jesus’ name.
