In Everything, Have a Grateful Heart and Give Thanks

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 5:20

always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

As we prepare our hearts and minds for Thanksgiving, God is reminding us that Thanksgiving is not just a holiday, but a lifestyle as a believer! Upon thinking about this, I’m reminded of an ole Gospel tune that says, “As I look back over my life, And I think things over, I can truly say that I’ve been blessed, I’ve got a testimony”! As I mediate on the truths of that song many thoughts come to mind with that song and the versus above, so here are some thoughts about thanksgiving and the goodness of our God:

  1. Count our blessings, not our disappointments or setbacks! If you were to tally them up, would we have more on the disappointment side or blessings side? Be honest, why do you think you came up with the answer you gave?
  2. Rejoice in the Lord always and again, I say rejoice!
  3. We should always have a heart of thanksgiving in all things/situations. Remember, however, just because God allows something does not necessarily mean he was the author of it! Sometimes we blame God for things He didn’t even do. Remember Satan is the accuser of the brethren and he was the one who was messing with Job in the book of Job, not God. God allowed it yes, but Satan was the one doing it. Let that be a lesson for us!
  4. If you just have to blame someone, blame Satan. The Bible says he is a liar and the father of lies, so if you just got to blame someone, blame Satan! Stop blaming God! Put the blame were the blame actually belongs.
  5. Again, count our blessings, not our disappointments or setbacks!
  6. Always have an attitude of gratitude, always. This is a lifestyle, not just a holiday!
  7. There’s another ole tune that says: “I will bless thee oh Lord, I will bless thee oh Lord, with a heart of thanksgiving, I will bless thee oh Lord! With my hands lifted up, and my heart filled with praise, with a heart of thanksgiving, I will bless thee oh Lord”!
  8. I will bless the Lord at all times and His praise will continually be in my mouth. (Psalm 34:1)

Closing Prayer: Lord I want to thank you! Thank you for bringing me out and allowing me to go through what I have been through this year, and by your grace and strength, I’m still here! With a heart of thanksgiving Lord, I will bless you and will rejoice always. I will remember to always give thanks not just on Thanksgiving but every day that You have allowed me to see. Thank you, Lord, for this day, and every day, I will bless you not just in my praise from my mouth but by my life and actions that I take, In Jesus’ name, Amen!
